The “2012 Best of the Road Rally” officially kicked off Friday in Washington, D.C. Through a contest to recognize America’s small towns sponsored by Rand McNally and USA Today, two-person traveling review teams were assigned to five categories including Most Patriotic, Most Beautiful, Best for Food, Friendliest, and Most Fun. Each team will visit six communities a category between now and July 13.
Mandan is a finalist for Most Patriotic City. Community leaders have been told to tentatively expect the “Midlife Road Trip” team, Rick Griffin of Atlanta, Georgia and Sandra McKenna of Tampa, Florida, to visit Mandan on July 6-7. A possibility remains that the travelers could arrive in time for Mandan’s Fourth of July festivities.
From Washington, D.C. the team was headed to Watertown, New York; Duluth, Georgia, DeLand, Florida; Enterprise, Alabama; and Gainesville, Texas. Mandan is their last stop before going to the contest’s ending point in Seattle, Washington.
Stay tuned for information about plans for the team’s visit to Mandan and ways the community can become involved in the visit. Mandan businesses and residents are encouraged to prepare by sprucing up properties, displaying the American flag and decorating in red, white and blue. Some additional ways businesses can show their patriotism in the month ahead include:
The winning towns in each category will be announced at the annual Destination Marketing Association International Conference in Seattle. Towns will also be featured in the Rand McNally 2014 Road Atlas. Participating cities can also expect to receive coverage in USA Today and on the Travel Channel.
